Hawaii Mesothelioma Lawyers

Malignant mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that affects the mesothelial lining of many of the body’s internal organs. Mesothelioma is caused almost exclusively by asbestos exposure. Many Hawaii citizens are now suffering from mesothelioma as a result of workplace exposure.

Danger Asbestos Warning SignSymptoms of mesothelioma can take up to 20-50 years to appear. This is because the latency period for mesothelioma is generally about the same length of time. Unfortunately, diagnosis is difficult because the symptoms resemble so many other, less severe conditions. After diagnosis, the prognosis is generally poor.

Abnormalities present in mesothelioma tissue include the deletion of tumor suppressor genes, such as Neurofibromatosis type 2 at 22q12, P16INK4A and P14ARF. Oncogenesis in mesothelial tissue occurs by several mechanisms including through the deletion of tumor suppressors, activation of oncogenes and proto-oncogenes, activation of telomerase and the suppression of apoptotic pathways. It is also thought that asbestos is immunosuppressive.

Mesothelioma comes in three forms:

  • Pleural mesothelioma is the most common mesothelioma affecting three fourths of mesothelioma sufferers. Pleural mesothelioma occurs in the pleural mesothelium, the mesothelium surrounding the lungs (chest cavity).
  • Peritoneal mesothelioma is the second most common mesothelioma affecting one fifth of mesothelioma sufferers. Peritoneal mesothelioma occurs in the peritoneal mesothelium, the mesothelium surrounding the abdominal cavity.
  • Pericardial mesothelioma is the least common mesothelioma affecting one twentieth of mesothelioma sufferers. Pericardial mesothelioma occurs in the pericardial mesothelium, the mesothelium surrounding the heart.
